Gurung Heritage Trail

Gurungs are one of the indigenous groups of Nepal living in the hilly and Himalayan regions. Gurung Heritage Trail leads through their settlements and gives you the possibility to enjoy unspoilt tradition, culture and festivals of this ethnic group. This tour offers spectacular views of Annapurna range, Lumjung, Ganesh and Manaslu Himals. The warm welcome of the people is an added flavour during your trip. Accommodation is provided in community-run home stays. Your hosts will provide you with delicious local food – Dal Bhat Tarkari, which entails rice, lentil soup, vegetables, bread and meat dishes.

Since many male Gurungs join the Nepali, British or Indian army and leave home when they are young, women take a predominant role in Gurung society. Every village has a mother's group also known as Ama Samuha where mothers are active, take initiatives and dedicate their time to development activities, cultural programs, income generation activities and conflict management in family and society.

Honey hunting is an age-old profession of Gurungs. Local honey hunters show skills using bamboo ladders and hemp ropes and climb steep cliff to harvest honeycombs of wild bees. The honey is harvested twice a year once in April-May and another time in October-November.

Handicraft is another traditional profession of Gurungs. They produce woollen products, various bamboo and wooden artefacts from local resources. These products can be purchased as souvenirs and are worth giving as presents to friends and families.
